ENC3493: Peer Tutoring in the Reading-Writing Center & Digital Studio

The following collection is the work I did for a course educating students on Reading-Writing Centers and providing them with the tools to feel confident working in one as a tutor.

A BIT MORE INFORMATION

Part of my work for this course included writing a literacy narrative exploring my motivations for wanting to work in a Reading-Writing Center. It goes over some experiences that have inspired me to choose writing as my path, and how those moments will go on to effect my tutoring identity. This document offers insight into who I am and how I plan to use that to help others.

For this course I also had to write a research paper exploring a problem or tension within writing centers. Growing up with an autistic brother inspired me to conduct research on ableism within these centers and how it affects these students. My paper also introduces solutions to this problem, with the hopes of creating more awareness around how to address and prevent ableism in Reading-Writing Centers.

This course also provided me with the unique opportunity to work in a writing center alongside an experienced mentor. For the these first two practicum sessions, I was a witness to the process of tutoring before actually participating in the following two sessions. My reflections remark on this journey and what I learned about tutoring and also myself.

Finally, my portfolio concludes with my Consultant Identity Statement. This document serves as a reflection on my experiences with the writing center and how those moments have inspired my teaching philosophy. Writing this statement helped me bridge what I've learned in this course to a practical outline of how I can use that knowledge in future tutoring sessions.
